John was one of the first full time students to study for a Certificate in Dental Technology, qualifying in 1978 from Manchester Polytechnic.
John’s first appointment was in the Department of Prosthodontics at Manchester Dental Hospital, following which he moved to North Manchester General Hospital, obtaining further experience in the maxillofacial unit. His passion for learning and advancing his skills led him to gaining the advanced City and Guilds Qualification in crown and bridgework, and he went on to join the RAF dental branch in 1980 giving him huge amounts of experience.
After leaving the RAF, John gained valuable commercial experience in several different laboratories and dental hospitals until he opened his own lab, Portland Ceramics, in August 1985, specialising in implant supported restorations and removable prosthetics. He ran his lab for sixteen very successful years, gaining an international reputation for his expertise, and when approached by Boots Dental Care in 2001, he made the decision to sell his laboratory.
In June 2005 John was awarded a Fellowship of the British Institute of Dental and Surgical Technologists. John has travelled extensively, attending courses all round Europe and has presented at the Association of Dental Implantology, the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, Nobel Biocare World Conference, the Createch symposium, the international removable denture conference in Tokyo and Neodent conference in Brazil.
Following successful qualification as a Clinical Dental Technician in 2015, John decided to invest in further training in Japan, with Professor Jiro Abe, and he is now an international instructor in the Lower Suction Denture Technique.
